We just went through immigration. The Canadians were so nice. They weren't bureacrats.
First we went through the line that every visitor goes through. Then, because we're arriving as immigrants, we went into a separate room. The official looked over our passports and a large document with three carbon copies that we had received in New York when we were approved for residency. We initialed that we've never been convicted of a crime and signed the document. Then we got photos of both of us shaking hands with the immigration official.
Then we went to customs and another official went through our entire list of items -- one page for items we have with us and nine pages of items to follow, everything including the brass J-O-Y letters we display at Christmas.
The Canadian officials were so pleasant, from the first immigration official to customs. Each one said, "Welcome to Canada."
We're so happy to be Canadian permanent residents.

What a gracious welcome. It sure beats the hell out of what generations of immigrants, also arriving - as you did - by boat, found in New York when they entered the harbor and went to get their papers approved.
I like the friendly face of the immigration official who greeted you. Any chance his first name is Ellis............and his last name is Island?
